WINTHROP RALLIES FOR HEART HEALTH; AHA NATIONAL START! WALKING DAY A SUCCESS

Mineola, NY – More than 100 Winthrop-University Hospital employees, members of the American Heart Association (AHA) staff and board of directors came out to show their support of National Start! Walking Day on April 7, 2010. To commemorate the kick off, Winthrop staff walked from the Hospital in Mineola to the Winthrop Wellness Pavilion on Franklin Avenue in Garden City, where they had an opportunity to hear from John F. Collins, Winthrop’s President & CEO and Chair of the AHA’s 2010 Heart Walk; Cindy McLoughlin, member of the American Heart Association’s Long Island Board of Directors and Partner at BDO Seidman, LLC; and George Gubernikoff, MD, Director of Clinical Cardiac Services and Medical Director of Winthrop’s Center for Aortic Diseases. Walkers also had an opportunity to receive information about the AHA and various Winthrop programs available to the employees.

Start! is the AHA’s national initiative that champions walking because it has the lowest dropout rate of any physical activity. Walking vigorously for 30 minutes a day can help reduce high blood pressure and cholesterol and reduce the risk of coronary heart disease. At Winthrop, organized walking programs encourage employees to get moving on their lunch breaks.

“The American Heart Association is honored to partner with Winthrop-University Hospital in encouraging its employees to embark upon an active and healthier life,” said Cindy McLoughlin, member of the American Heart Association’s Long Island Board of Directors.

Winthrop-University Hospital has long been respected for its outstanding cardiac care, delivered through the Winthrop Institute for Heart Care, which offers advanced diagnostics, disease prevention and treatment programs in the full range of cardiac services including interventional cardiology, electrophysiology and cardiac surgery.
