Mineola, NY - Winthrop-University Hospital’s Health Update for Seniors community education series will present a free program, “Stroke Smart: Prevention & Awareness” on Wednesday, March 10, 2010. The program begins with a lecture at 1:15 PM, followed by blood pressure checks at 2:45 PM. It will be held at the Mineola Community Center, 155 Washington Avenue in Mineola.

Kathleen Michel, Nurse Practitioner, Coordinator of the Cerebrovascular Program at Winthrop, will explain the warning signs of a stroke and the significance of taking immediate action to seek treatment. “It’s crucial that people understand that time is of the essence,” said Ms. Michel. “Given the medications and treatment options available, getting to the hospital quickly may make a difference in the quality of life for the patient.”

Attendees will also learn about risk factors and how they can reduce their risk through preventative measures. A question and answer period will follow the lecture.
