WINTHROP CONDUCTS HANDS-ON DEMONSTRATIONS OF LONG ISLAND’S FIRST DAVINCI® SI™ HD SYSTEM FOR MINIMALLY INVASIVE ROBOTIC SURGERY

Mineola, NY – In celebration of the upcoming installation of a daVinci SiHD Surgical System, Winthrop-University Hospital hosted a day-long hands-on demonstration of the state-of-the-science surgical robot in the hospital’s main lobby on Wednesday, August 26.

The daVinci SiHD Surgical System integrates 3-D high definition (HD) endoscopy and state-of-the-art robotic technology to virtually extend the surgeon’s eyes and hands into the surgical field. The system enables surgeons to perform many procedures in a minimally-invasive yet extraordinarily precise manner through smaller incisions, robotic technology and unparalleled 3-D HD visualization of the surgical site.

“We are very pleased to be the first hospital in the region to acquire the daVinci SiHD system,” said John F. Collins, president and CEO of Winthrop. “This new technology is an excellent complement to our existing services, and a tremendous step forward in high-tech minimally invasive surgery. The acquisition of the daVinci SiHD is consistent with Winthrop’s goal of providing the best possible care to our patients.”

The daVinci Surgical System consists of an ergonomically designed surgeon’s console, a patient-side cart with interactive robotic arms, the high-performance InSite® Vision System and proprietary EndoWrist® Instruments. Powered by state-of-the-art robotic technology, the surgeon’s hand movements are scaled, filtered and seamlessly translated into precise movements of the EndoWrist Instruments. The net result is an intuitive interface with breakthrough surgical capabilities.

Among the added capabilities of the new Si model are Dual Console Capability and Enhanced 3-D HD vision equivalent to 1080i. The daVinci System also offers patient benefits including a shorter hospital stay, less pain, less blood loss, fewer transfusions and a quicker return to normal activities.

Among the fastest growing specialty procedures being performed by the daVinci surgical robot are hysterectomies, colon resections, gastric bypass, mitral valve repair and prostatectomy.
