WINTHROP-UNIVERSITY HOSPITAL ANNOUNCES CLINICAL AFFILIATION WITH COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY’S HERBERT IRVING COMPREHENSIVE CANCER CENTER

Mineola, NY – Winthrop-University Hospital is pleased to announce that it has established a formal clinical affiliation between its Institute for Cancer Care and the Herbert Irving Comprehensive Cancer Center at Columbia University. The partnership broadens the diagnostic, preventive, treatment and support opportunities for patients at both institutions, as the two world-class hospitals work together to offer the best possible care to their patients.

The Institute for Cancer Care at Winthrop-University Hospital is Certified with Commendation by the American College of Surgeons’ Commission on Cancer. The Herbert Irving Comprehensive Cancer Center at Columbia University is a National Cancer Institute (NCI)-designated comprehensive cancer center – one of only 39 such NCI-designated cancer centers in the United States, of which only three are in New York State.

Winthrop’s Institute for Cancer Care offers a wide range of diagnostics, including state-of-the-art imaging via ultrasound, CT, MRI and PET scanning; mammography and nuclear imaging, as well as a comprehensive array of treatment options from surgery, radiation therapy and stereotactic radiosurgery to chemotherapy, hormone & biological therapy, and photodynamic dye therapy (PDT). In addition, the hospital’s pain management and support programs address the related physical, psychological and social implications of cancer.

Winthrop offers comprehensive cancer care through highly specialized programs including the highly respected Winthrop-University Hospital Lung Cancer Program, the Gynecologic Oncology Program, the CyberKnife® Stereotactic Radiosurgery Center and more.

The Herbert Irving Comprehensive Cancer Center (HICCC) of Columbia University has been a National Cancer Institute (NCI)-designated cancer center for more than 30 years, and is dedicated to the cure of cancer through innovative research, training of researchers and clinicians, and outstanding patient care. In partnership with NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital, the internationally-recognized researchers and clinicians of the HICCC bring together the best approaches for prevention, diagnosis and treatment of all types of cancer.

Patients receiving cancer care at either hospital – Winthrop-University Hospital on Long Island in Mineola or Columbia University Medical Center in New York City – now have access to the facilities, resources, research breakthroughs and intellectual insight of both institutions.
