Mineola, NY – Winthrop-University Hospital’s Perspectives in Health series and the Winthrop Diabetes Education Center, in celebration of its 30th Anniversary, will offer a free program, “Fresh Ideas: Cooking with Chris Smith, the Diabetic Chef®,” on Thursday, November 5, 2009. The program will begin with a products fair at 6:30 PM, followed by Chef Smith’s cooking demonstration at 7:30. It will be held at Winthrop’s Community Outreach Center, 101 Mineola Boulevard at the corner of Second Street in Mineola.

By using the approach of integrating the techniques used in top restaurants to enhance the flavor of food with basic meal-planning and food preparation in the home, Chef Smith will demonstrate cooking tasty, creative dishes that are simple to prepare. He is the author of two books, “Cooking with the Diabetic Chef” and “The Diabetic Chef’s Year-Round Cookbook,” a contributing editor for Better Homes & Gardens Diabetic Living® magazine, and has been featured in local newspapers and on radio across the country. Diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at the age of 27 while training at the world renowned Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park, Chris Smith is personally committed to combining his personal experience with diabetes and his professional expertise as a chef to educate people on how to cook fresh meals full of flavor.

Chef Smith’s “Fresh Ideas” presentation is consistent with the Diabetes Education Center’s commitment to provide the community with ongoing support and guidance in managing diabetes. Founded in 1979, the Winthrop Diabetes Education Center was the first diabetes education program in New York State to be accredited by the American Diabetes Association. It provides the knowledge, skills and tools people living with diabetes need to manage their chronic conditions successfully and avoid the many associated complications.

“This presentation will be both entertaining and informative,” said Virginia Peragallo-Dittko, RN, BC-ADM, MA, CDE, Director of the Diabetes Education Center at Winthrop. “It is an ideal event to culminate the 30th anniversary of the Center, which is unique in both its scope of services and years of service to the community.” The only program of its type in the New York Metropolitan area, the Diabetes Education Center provides an unparalleled resource for adults and children with diabetes.

Parking and the entrance are available in the rear of the building. Seating is limited and pre-registration is required. To reserve a space, please call (516) 663-8300.
