Bhawna Halwan, MD, Specialist in GI Capsule Endoscopy and Women’s GI also joins Winthrop

Mineola, NY– Winthrop-University Hospital is pleased to announce the appointment of Peter F. Malet, MD, to the position of Director of the Center for Liver Diseases in the Hospital’s Institute for Digestive Disorders.

An expert in the diagnosis and management of liver diseases, Dr. Malet joins Winthrop after more than a decade at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center. As a hepatologist, he brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to the Center for Liver Diseases at Winthrop. Dr. Malet and the Center share a commitment to providing patients with comprehensive assessment and management of the full range of conditions affecting the liver. Under his direction, the Center will offer evaluations for liver transplantation in conjunction with New York-Presbyterian Hospital/Columbia University Medical Center.

A graduate of the State University of New York Health Science Center at Brooklyn, Dr. Malet completed his internal medicine training at Albany Medical Center and a fellowship in gastroenterology at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania.

Dr. Malet is Board certified in Internal Medicine and Gastroenterology and is the author of numerous articles on chronic hepatitis C, diseases of the gallbladder, and other topics pertaining to hepatology. Among his various editorial and committee appointments, Dr. Malet recently served as a member of the Committee on Recent Advances in Gastroenterology for the American Board of Internal Medicine in Gastroenterology.

Dr. Malet has held leadership positions at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania and Philadelphia Veterans Affairs Medical Center, and is an active member of several professional societies including the American Gastroenterological Association, American Association for the Study of Liver Disease, and the American College of Physicians.

Also recently joining the Division of Gastroenterology at Winthrop is Bhawna Halwan, MD, who specializes in capsule endoscopy, esophageal and anorectal manometry, reflux disease (GERD), non-cardiac chest pain, swallowing disorders, and women’s health issues in gastroenterology. Dr. Halwan joins Winthrop from the State University of New York (SUNY) Downstate Medical Center in Brooklyn where she served as the Director of Esophageal and Motility Services.

Dr. Halwan completed her medical school training at the Federal University of Paraiba, Brazil, her residency at SUNY Buffalo and a gastroenterology fellowship at Yale University. Upon completing her training in gastroenterology, Dr. Halwan obtained a Master of Science Degree in Clinical Research from Emory University, where she also was an Assistant Professor in the Division of Digestive Diseases.

A Diplomate of the American Board of Internal Medicine in Gastroenterology, Dr. Halwan is also a member of the American Gastroenterological Association, the American College of Gastroenterology, and the American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy.
