REVEREND WINFRIED R. HESS APPOINTED DIRECTOR OF PASTORAL CARE AND EDUCATION
Mineola, New York: Reverend Winfried Hess, (Mineola) an ordained minister of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, has been appointed to a newly-created positon at Winthrop-University Hospital, Director of Pastoral Care and Education. The position has been funded by Winthrop's Chaplaincy Endowment Fund, which is supported by the Hospital's Auxiliary.
In his new, multi-faceted position, Reverend Hess contributes to the healing process at Winthrop, by addressing its spiritual dimensions.
Reverend Hess will develop the Hospital's new Pastoral Care Department, serving as a liaison between the Hospital and community clergy of all faiths and denominations. Additionally, Reverend Hess will direct and oversee clinical pastoral education students who will be assigned to Winthrop through The HealthCare Chaplaincy, the world's largest center for pastoral care and clinical training. In this new endeavor, chaplaincy students from seminaries of all faiths will receive hands-on clinical pastoral training at Winthrop, while providing spiritual care services to patients and their families, staff, and physicians, under the guidance of Reverend Hess.
Reverend Hess will advise Winthrop caregivers on potentially sensitive issues associated with caring for patients from diverse religious backgrounds. Above all, the new Chaplain's role will raise awareness of the spiritual dimension of healing, while cultivating an understanding of, and respect for, the traditions of the diverse religious communities served by Winthrop.
Born in central Germany, Reverend Hess studied theology at the Universities of Bethel, Tubingen, Berlin, and Marburg in Germany; earned a Master of Divinity degree at United Theological Seminary in Dayton, Ohio, where he held a scholarship from the World Council of Churches; completed a Residency in Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) at Lutheran Medical Center, Brooklyn, New York; served as Pastor of St. Nicolai Church, Frankfurt, Germany; and has supervised numerous CPE programs and students. Since 1992, Reverend Hess has been Pastor and Chaplain at the Center for Psychiatry, University Clinic, Frankfurt. Throughout his career, he has had substantial experience in developing dialogue with various religious communities and minority groups.
Reverend Hess is married to Linda Sierra-Averitt, a behavioral psychologist, who was born on Long Island. The couple has two children, Samuel, age 10, and Benjamin, age four.
