RENOWNED CARDIOLOGIST DR. SRIHARI NAIDU JOINS WINTHROP-UNIVERSITY HOSPITAL
Mineola, NY – Winthrop-University Hospital is proud to announce the appointment of Dr. Srihari Naidu to the role of Director of its Cardiac Catheterization Center, which includes four technologically advanced cardiac catheterization labs. Dr. Naidu is well-known as a clinician and researcher in the field of interventional cardiology, and is an expert in the care and treatment of Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy, the most common cause of heart-related sudden death in people under 30 years of age. Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy is characterized by an excessive thickening of heart muscle. As a result, the heart cannot fill properly with blood and is not capable of pumping blood effectively. This combination may result in shortness of breath, lightheadedness, palpitations and even heart failure. In rare instances, it can lead to sudden collapse and even death during or following rigorous exercise. Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy is a genetic disease, but it often appears without an obvious family history, and may present at any age. At Winthrop-University Hospital, Dr. Naidu has introduced a new minimally-invasive method of treatment for Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy, for patients in whom medical therapy has failed. The procedure provides a less invasive alternative to open-heart surgery, known as septal myectomy, during which a cardiac surgeon physically removes a small amount of muscle from the affected area of the heart. The new technique is called Alcohol Septal Ablation, and involves the controlled injection of a small amount of absolute alcohol into the heart to destroy excessive heart muscle in the septum. Dr. Naidu, who trained in the procedure at the University of Pennsylvania Medical Center and then introduced the technique at New York Presbyterian Hospital – Cornell Medical Center, has developed modifications to the procedure, which have been published in a series of recent journal articles. Dr. Naidu is also an expert in other aspects of interventional cardiology specifically dealing with structural heart disease. These include the latest techniques for repairing heart defects known as Atrial Septal Defect (ASD) and Patent Foramen Ovale (PFO), both of which involve a hole in the heart muscle and can lead to stroke or heart failure if left untreated. The arrival of Dr. Naidu, a cardiac interventionalist trained and experienced in all aspects of structural heart disease, provides Winthrop patients access to the full range of treatment options for Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy. The alcohol ablation method of treatment, which is available only at a very small number of hospitals, adds another important tool to the armamentarium of treatment options at Winthrop and on Long Island. Dr. Naidu earned his bachelor of science and M.D. degrees at Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island. He completed an internship and residency in Internal Medicine at New York Presbyterian Hospital-Cornell Medical Center in Manhattan, as well as training in Internal Medicine at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center. He then performed two fellowships – in General Cardiology and Interventional Cardiology – at the University of Pennsylvania Medical Center in Philadelphia, PA. Dr. Naidu served as an Assistant Professor of Medicine at Weill Medical College of Cornell University (2004-06) and is currently a candidate for Associate Professor of Medicine at Stony Brook University School of Medicine. In addition to serving as Director of the Cardiac Catheterization Center and Associate Attending Physician at Winthrop, Dr. Naidu will assume the position of Director of Winthrop’s Interventional Cardiology Fellowship Program. The Program is fully accredited to train two interventional fellows in all aspects of interventional cardiology each year. Dr. Naidu has been recognized with awards and honors from many organizations including the American Heart Association, American College of Cardiology, Cardiac Nurses Service Line, Bristol-Myers Squibb Fellows Forum of Excellence, and Astra-Zeneca Young Investigators’ Competition. He was also the recipient of the New York Presbyterian Hospital Award for Administration, and the University of Pennsylvania Medical Center Fellow Teaching Award. Dr. Naidu has performed extensive research in interventional cardiology and heart failure and has published over 15 papers and book chapters in prestigious journals including Circulation, the American Journal of Cardiology and the Journal of Interventional Cardiology. He has also delivered presentations and invited lectures at medical conferences across the United States and Europe, and routinely serves as Abstract Reviewer and Scientific Session Moderator for both the American Heart Association and the American College of Cardiology. Winthrop-University Hospital is home of the Institute for Heart Care, which offers advanced diagnostics and disease prevention programs, as well as sophisticated medical treatment and rehabilitation, and a superior cardiac surgery and interventional program known across New York State for its excellent outcomes. To meet the growing need for services and to support the staff's extraordinary level of treatment, Winthrop opened a new 26,000-square-foot Heart Surgery Center in 2004, which features 26 telemetry beds, 22 intensive care rooms and four cardiac operating rooms. In addition, the Miller Interventional Cardiology Pavilion includes the Cardiac Catheterization Center and a newly constructed state-of-the-art Electrophysiology Center.
