Child Care Education & Maternal Education Programs
The Division of Maternal/Child Care in the Department of Nursing at Winthrop-University Hospital promotes Patient and Family Centered Care (PFC) with a wide selection of child care education and maternal education programs for expectant and new mothers, fathers and young siblings designed to help the entire family adjust to a whole new life when the baby arrives.
“Welcome to Winthrop” Orientation Program (90 Minute Class)
Expectant parents learn about Winthrop’s Family Centered Care approach to patient care, as well as the New Life Center’s labor, delivery and recovery facilities. Features slide presentation and Q&A session.
Inpatient Educational Programs
Baby Care Education – Individualized instruction provided by the nursing staff on the patient care unit
Breastfeeding Education – Individualized instruction provided by the nursing staff and Certified Lactation Consultant.
Lamaze Instruction – Individualized instruction offered by a Certified Childbirth Educator to high-risk antepartum inpatients who cannot attend classes.
Baby Care & the Preterm Infant Education – Baby care instruction provided in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). Newborn medicine experts discuss the specialized needs of the preterm baby and general baby care.
Individualized CPR Education – Instruction and demonstrations for families with high-risk infants in the NICU and children being discharged from the Pediatric Unit.
Newborn TV Channel – Free of charge on the antepartum, postpartum, and NICU units as well as in the New Life Center, the channel provides 24-hour programming in English and Spanish on topics of interest to new parents, including breastfeeding, bottle feeding, parenting, postpartum, child safety and sibling rivalry.

Outpatient Classes & Educational Services
Childbirth Preparation Classes (Three 2-hour classes held weekly) – Childbirth preparation for couples teaches pregnant women how to work effectively with their bodies using exercise, relaxation, breathing techniques, focal points and imagery to decrease pain, fatigue and anxiety during childbirth.
One Refresher Class (One 2-hour class) – A review course for those whose last delivery was less than 2-1/2 years ago.
Sibling Class (One 1-hour class) – For children ages 2-1/2 to 6 accompanied by an adult family member or friend. The class facilitates positive self-esteem and shows children practical ways to help out at home with the new baby. Children can speak about their feelings about becoming a Big Brother or Sister and tour the Maternity Unit and Nursery.
Breastfeeding Class (One 2-hour class) – Practical information and strategies for successful breastfeeding to provide the newborn with the best nutrition, protect the baby from infection, assist the mother with weight reduction and enhance bonding between mother and baby.
Baby Care Class (One 2-hour class) – Provides expectant parents with instruction on infant bathing, dressing, feeding and safety. Attending before delivery eases the transition into parenthood.
Pre-natal Yoga – An eight-week series teaching relaxing exercise in gentle yoga postures will increase flexibility, strength, circulation, balance and the mind-body-spirit connection. Certified yoga instructors will guide mom in a safe and supportive manner through movements and techniques to support their pregnancy.
