Lumbar Epidural Steroid Injections at Winthrop-University Hospital

Lumbar epidural steroid injections (ESIs) are a non-surgical treatment for the management of sciatica and low back pain. Unlike oral steroids and painkillers which have a dispersed, less-focused impact and may have unacceptable side effects, lumbar epidural steroid injections deliver medication directly (or very near) to the source of the pain. The injections can also help control local inflammation.

The effects of lumbar epidural steroid injections tend to be temporary. However, patients typically find the injections to be very beneficial during acute episodes of back and/or leg pain.
