Facet Joint Injections at NYU Winthrop Hospital

Diagnosing pain and providing relief with facet joint injections

Facet joints are small joints located at each segment of the spine that provide stability and help guide motion. They can become painful for a variety of reasons including arthritis of the spine, back injury, or mechanical stress to the back.

What are Facet Joint Injections?
Facet joint injections, also called facet blocks, help diagnose the cause and location of back pain and also provide relief. By placing numbing medication into the facet joint, the amount of immediate relief helps confirm or deny the joint as a source of pain.

Along with numbing medication, facet joint injections also contain time-released cortisone into the facet joint to reduce inflammation. This can provide long-term pain relief.
