11th Annual Opera Night Raises $75,000 for Child Life

On March 13, 2008, community members and staff of Winthrop-University Hospital spent an evening of fine dining and outstanding musical performances from internationally renowned opera singers to raise funds to benefit Winthrop's Child Life Program. The 11th Annual Night at the Opera, "Sweet Voices for Precious Children," was Winthrop's most successful opera night yet - raising $75,000 for a program that is dedicated exclusively to minimizing children's fears and anxiety during the hospital experience.

"Sweet Voices for Precious Children," Winthrop's Eleventh Annual Night at the Opera, featured performances by (left to right) Jennifer Peterson, pianist; Karen Foster, soprano; Michael Wanko, baritone, and Tonna Miller, soprano.

More than 230 guests were in attendance at the first Night at the Opera to be held off-campus at the magnificent Garden City Hotel. Guests enjoyed a cocktail hour and sit-down dinner as the magnificent harmony of Karen Foster, soprano; Tonna Miller, soprano; and Michael Wanko, baritone, accompanied by pianist Jennifer Peterson filled the room. Topping off the night, guests had a chance to win one of 29 raffle prizes.

The funds raised at Night at the Opera support Winthrop's extraordinary Child Life Program, through which certified Child Life Specialists utilize play and education to improve the understanding of medical procedures; teach relaxation techniques to help the patients cope with illness or surgery, and provide emotional support for the entire family.

"Using a very special team approach, our Child Life Specialists work closely with doctors, nurses and support staff to provide children with a sense of control over a seemingly uncontrollable situation," explained Warren Rosenfeld, MD, Chairman of Pediatrics. "This interaction gives our young patients a chance to express his or her feelings, ask questions and understand the entire hospital experience."

"We are so appreciative of the community's loyal support to Winthrop's Child Life Program," said AnnMarie DiFrancesca, Director, Child Life Program. "Their goodwill continues to enable the Child Life team to meet the unique psychosocial needs of our pediatric patients and their families. Ultimately, we want each child to return home and enjoy a happy and healthy childhood, as quickly as possible." For more information about the Child Life Program, contact Ms. DiFrancesca at (516) 663-2761.
