Message from the Chairman
Aaron E. Katz, MD - Chairman of Urology
The Department of Urology at Winthrop-University Hospital on Long Island provides optimal, comprehensive and the most advanced treatment options of the full range of urologic conditions for male and female patients. Our close-knit, highly experienced team of physicians, physician assistants, nurses, nurse navigators and social workers is committed to providing exceptional, personalized patient care.
Clinically, our team has a special interest in less invasive surgery. Specifically, we perform robotic kidney-sparing surgery for renal cancers, as well as laparoscopic/robotic prostatectomy for patients with the most complex prostate cancers. In addition, Winthrop is a center of excellence for prostate cryotherapy and focal ablation for men with small cancers on one side of the prostate.
In addition to performing oncologic procedures, Winthrop urologists use the latest technology in endourology, which employs small fiberoptic scopes that can be passed through the urethra to visualize the lining of the urinary tract from kidney to bladder. This allows us to treat urethral obstruction, enlarged prostate, bladder tumors and urinary stones without incisions. Thin, flexible instruments, including lasers, graspers, miniature stone retrieval baskets, special scalpels and cautery, can be advanced through the scope to perform the procedures. Our department has treated over 1,000 patients with kidney stones. We utilize the latest technology to perform laser stone ablation, extra-corporeal shock wave lithotripsy and percutaneous stone removal.
Winthrop’s urologists are also skilled at performing a wide range of minimally invasive options for men with benign enlargement of the prostate. Many of these procedures are performed with laser therapy on an outpatient basis. We also have experts to treat erectile dysfunction and impotence.
Our highly trained pediatric urologists — who are among the most experienced in the country — offer the complete range of straight-forward and advanced open and minimally invasive pediatric urologic procedures.
Our mission is to utilize the most comprehensive, current, minimally invasive procedures for all our patients, while supporting their psychological and emotional needs, as well as those of their families. To that end, our specially trained nurse navigators serve as valuable resources. We also have a Prostate Cancer Support Group for prostate cancer patients and families to help them cope and understand the dynamics of their disease.
In summary, Winthrop’s Department of Urology seeks to provide its patients with the absolute best in modern urological care. I encourage you to visit this website to familiarize yourself with our services and programs. For more information, please call us at 1-866- WINTHROP,
Wishing you the best of health,
