Because children have unique needs and special concerns -- especially when they are ill -- the Cancer Center for Kids is staffed by a multidisciplinary team of specialists, including:
  • Pediatric Hematology/Oncology Physicians
All Center physicians are board certified in Pediatrics and Pediatric Hematology/ Oncology. Their extensive clinical training and decades of experience in dealing with the entire spectrum of childhood blood disorders and cancers has enabled them to blend the most current, superior, innovative and effective therapies with the sensitive, personal unconditional attention children and their families need to fight cancer.

Mark E. Weinblatt, MD, Chief, Division of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology and Director, Cancer Center for Kids

    Igal Fligman, MD

    Bill Gerba, MD

    Naomi Moskowitz, MD

    Philip Scimeca, MD
Our doctors coordinate cancer surgery with Winthrop-University Hospital's highly skilled and experienced pediatric surgeon, Charles Coren, MD.

The Center also provides the following of supportive services from a wide range of specialists, including a: pediatric radiologist, interventional radiologist, pediatric pathologist, radiotherapist, cytogeneticist, a full coagulation laboratory, and a full service blood bank.

Each patient's referring physician is included in the treatment plan and kept up to date about the child's situation and progress.

  • Pediatric Hematology/Oncology Nurses
All the Center nurses are educated in the subspecialty of Pediatric Oncology as established by the Association of Pediatric Oncology Nurses (APON), and the majority are certified in this specialty.

With compassion that helps children feel more comfortable during treatment, the Center's nurses administer treatments and have the most hands-on contact with the young patients during their stays in the outpatient clinic or Hospital. The bonds they form with the children frequently extend beyond the Center, as the nurses often become part of their patients' lives.
Sharon Coritsidis, RN, MSN, CPNP, CPON, Nurse Practitioner

Cathy Shimmel, RN, MA, CPON, Nurse Manager

    Kathleen Corneliess, RN, MA, CPON

    Maria Curtis, RN, CPON

    Patricia Dunne-Martin, RN

    Stephanie, Merkis, RN

    Colleen Messmer, RN, CPON

    Linda Skelly, RN, MS, CPON
  • Clinical Psychologists
The Center's clinical psychologist has special training in subspecialties, including Pediatric Critical Illness, Chronic Illness and Pain Management.

With the talent, education and wisdom to aid and counsel all family members, including patients, siblings, parents and grandparents -- individually and in group settings, they assess and meet each child's unique emotional needs and address each family's special concerns through the many programs and support groups they conduct.
    Norman Fried, PhD
  • Social Worker
The Center's social worker makes certain that the young patients' educational needs continue to be met during treatment -- whether they are hospitalized, require home tutoring or need help with re-entering school. If necessary, they also help families find financial assistance to alleviate some of the non-medical burdens that often arise when catastrophic illness strikes.
  • Child Life Specialists, Art Therapists, Music Therapists
These professionals have the training and ability to help seriously ill youngsters cope with the daunting challenge of their illnesses and intense treatments. Through therapeutic play, arts and crafts, entertainment and other activities, these specialists help alleviate fear and anxiety, making the children's and families' experience with cancer as stress-free as possible and ensuring that it becomes a life-strengthening event.
  • Volunteers
The Center's professionals are supported by a dedicated corps of volunteers.
