Joint Replacement
Total joint replacement is the removal of a joint damaged by arthritis or other factors, and replacement of the joint with an artificial joint. Normally, the ends of the bones that form a joint are covered with a smooth layer called cartilage. Normal cartilage allows nearly frictionless and pain-free movement. However, when the cartilage is damaged or diseased by arthritis, joints become stiff and painful. Total joint replacement may be considered when other treatment options have failed to relieve a patient’s pain and disability. Many joint replacements can even be performed through minimally invasive surgery (MIS).
