HIGH-RISK PREGNANCY

Winthrop-University Hospital is renowned throughout the region for its high-risk obstetrical program and technologically advanced facility. Our mission is to promote the health of mothers and babies by providing patients and their obstetricians with a comprehensive program for the assessment and care of the high-risk mother and fetus.

The Division of Maternal-Fetal Medicine has a highly trained staff of experts, including Board Certified Perinatologists, Perinatal Nurses and Imaging Technologists specializing in obstetrics and gynecology.

The New Life Center at Winthrop has special exam rooms dedicated to the observation of high-risk patients, in addition to an inpatient, high-risk, antipartum unit. Services include:


  • CONSULTATION AND MONITORING FOR WOMEN WITH:
    • Pre-existing medical conditions, such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease and renal disease
    • High-risk pregnancies such as preterm labor, pregnancy-induced hypertension and multiple gestation

OBSTETRICAL SURVEILLANCE MANAGEMENT is available to diagnose a wide variety of fetal conditions, identify problems early and ensure the best possible outcome for mother and infant. Our Perinatal Testing Laboratory has been granted American Institute of Ultrasound in Medicine (AIUM) accreditation in obstetrical and gynecological ultrasound by the Ultrasound Practice Accreditation Commission. Testing capabilities include:

  • Fetal sonography (Level I & II)
  • Fetal echocardiography
  • Pelvic ultrasound
  • Amniocentesis
  • Doppler blood flow measurements
  • Non-stress testing
  • Biophysical profiles
  • Chorionic villus sampling
  • Cordocentesis

  • PATIENT EDUCATION
    Patient and family education concerning high-risk conditions is available through prenatal, perinatal and neonatal consultation. Genetic counseling and counseling for patients with diabetes are also available.

    Maternal-Fetal Medicine services at Winthrop
    are offered 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
