Under the direction of a faculty preceptor, the student will be exposed to the clinical activities of a high-risk obstetrics service and participate in ongoing research activities. Learning opportunities will inclde interpreation of fetal cardiotocography tracing, obstetric ultrasound examinations, Level III obstetrics care of women transported to Winthrop-University Hospital, observing genetic amniocentesis and research into fetal and uterine Doppler velocimetry, fetal-monitoring, acid base balance and myometrial physiology. There will be weekly research meetings and an optional research project.

The student may arrange to have a general experience in ambulatory and inpatient obstetrics and gynecology, with special emphasis on the role of the OB/GYN practitioner as a primary care physician. As an alternative, special programs may be tailored to meet student interest, such as a pure ambulatory care experience or inpatient gynecology. Students will attend resident teaching conferences, of which there is one daily and four hours on Friday mornings. Students in this course will function as part of the patient care team under the supervision of a faculty preceptor.

Reproductive Endocrinology

Students gain a broad experience in reproductive medicine, including the use of medication, surgery and IVF to treat infertile patients, and those with menstrual abnormalities and related medical conditions such as PCO and endometriosis. Students also will have the opportunity to see how an andrology and endocrine laboratory functions.
Winthrop-University Hospital's Reproductive Endocrine Division provides reproductive services on a daily basis, including Saturdays and Sundays. Students are expected to follow patients through their monitoring and work-up and participate in office hours and gather information concerning treatment and management strategies.

Under the direction of the Gynecologic Oncology staff, students are expected to see patients in the office setting and be involved in the management plans of these patients. They are expected to follow patients, very closely, and work with the gynecologic oncology team to provide the best possible care.
In the operating room, students will be exposed to most of the principles of radical pelvic surgery and will also be called upon as more active participants, in some procedures. They will follow patients postoperatively, in conjunction with residents, and assist in patient management and discharge planning.
Students are expected to attend all departmental educational conferences including tumor board and pathology conferences. Throughout the rotation students will work very closely with the faculty and residents assigned to the services
