International Student 4th Year Opportunities


Consistent with the educational mission of Winthrop University Hospital, 4th year opportunities are available in Internal Medicine and Pediatrics to students matriculated at St. George's University, Technion and Sackler Schools of Medicine. Winthrop considers it an obligation and privilege to provide physicians pursuing advanced training with a supportive environment that will nurture ingenuity and resourcefulness and support their development into skilled, knowledgeable and talented clinicians. Qualified applicants will be able to avail themselves of quality learning and teaching combined with exposure to a wide range of patient experiences.

Rotations are offered on a competitive basis to those students who meet the following criteria:

  • Native born or naturalized US Citizen
  • Native born or naturalized Canadian citizen
  • In good academic standing
  • Have successfully completed the clerkship in the same discipline

    The application process consists of

  • Completed application including health clearance (PDF)
  • Dean's Letter referencing your rank in class and other academic attributes.
  • Letter of Eligibility from NYS Education Department (if required)
  • Copy of Clerkship evaluation in associated discipline
  • Evidence of current malpractice coverage
  • Evidence of current health coverage

    All application materials must be submitted in one packet, at least two months before your requested start date, but no more than 4 months beforehand. Completed package should be mailed to the Office of Academic Affairs, Winthrop University Hospital, 222 Station Plaza North, Suite 510, Mineola, N.Y. 11501 att: Registrar. Incomplete applications will not be considered.

    You will receive a response from the Registrar's Office within 4 weeks of submitting the application along with instructions on what to do when reporting to Winthrop.

    Important Information:

    Evaluation
    All departments use a standard evaluation form to report your performance. Should your school require that its own form be used, you should ensure that it is forwarded to the Office of Academic Affairs prior to, or during, your rotation. You will also be asked to complete an evaluation of each course at the conclusion of the program.

    Liability Insurance/ Health Insurance
    It is expected that your medical school maintains responsibility for medical liability on you during your assignment to Winthrop-University Hospital. In addition, you are expected to have valid health insurance coverage while on assignment here. Certification of these matters must be documented.

    Fees
    There are no fees required for participation in clinical training at Winthrop-University Hospital.

    Housing
    A limited amount of housing is available for medical students form outside the metropolitan New York/Long Island area, on a first-come, first-served basis. Once your receive notification that your rotation is approved, you should contact Jeanne Scheick in the WUH Housing Office at (516) 663-2036 or by e-mail at jschiek@winthrop.org.
