Cardiac Anesthesiology

Course Description: The rotation will consist of a 4-week block and should be undertaken by those students who have a previous exposure to general anesthesiology. During this rotation the medical student will assist in patient care while obtaining a fundamental understanding of how a cardiac surgical case is managed by the anesthesiology team. They will be involved in the didactics during this month, which will be provided, by the attending anesthesiologist.

Clinical Anesthesiology

Course Description: This four week elective can be customized to meet your developing interest in Anesthesiology.  Students can choose 2 two-week blocks from the following areas: 
  • General Anesthesia:  Students can learn from the anesthetic management in general surgical cases.  Emphasis will be preoperative evaluation, airway management, pharmacologic principles of anesthetic agents and choice of anesthetic technique.
  • Pediatric Anesthesia:  Students can learn from the anesthetic management of pediatric cases.   Emphasis will be on preoperative evaluation, airway management and intraoperative management of children from premature babies to teenagers.
  • Obstetrical Anesthesia:  Students can learn from the anesthetic management of obstetrical cases.   Emphasis will be on physiologic changes with pregnancy and the management of regional anesthesia for both labor and delivery.
  • Neurosurgical Anesthesia:  Emphasis will be on preoperative evaluation, airway management, hemodynamic monitoring and intra-operative management of vascular cases.
  • Vascular Anesthesia: These patients represent some of our most complicated cases from coexisting disease viewpoint.  Emphasis will be on preoperative evaluation, airway management, homodynamic monitoring and intra-operative management of neurosurgical cases.

Students can also choose to spend all of their time in one specialty area.  Students will participate in patient evaluation, administration of anesthesia and postoperative follow-up under the guidance of an attending anesthesiologist.

Pain Medicine

Course Description: The goal of the Anesthesiology Pain Medicine Rotation is to enhance the medical student?s overall knowledge, understanding and application of pain medicine principles.  Students should expect significant interaction with anesthesiologists and other physician extenders specializing in pain management. The rotation will provide a clinical and didactic exposure to all aspects of pain medicine in a tertiary care medical center including exposure to acute, chronic, and cancer pain in an adult population. The student will become familiar with the options for treatment of pain and gain instruction for the use opioids, NSAIDs, and other agents in the treatment of pain.
