Chairman's Message

As Chairman of the Department of Medicine at Winthrop-University Hospital, and Vice Chairman of Department of Medicine at the State University of New York at Stony Brook, I would like to invite you to explore our Internal Medicine Residency Program and our website. Winthrop-University Hospital is a special place with a unique clinical and academic environment. Our Internal Medicine Residency Program offers the opportunity to learn the clinical and academic aspects of Internal Medicine and its subspecialties in a friendly learning environment. Winthrop provides outstanding primary and tertiary care clinical services with a full-time faculty dedicated to patient care, research, and medical education. We are actively involved in medical education at all levels, from medical students to practitioner, and participate in research at both the basic science and clinical level. We have fellowships in all subspecialties of internal medicine.

As the primary Nassau County campus of SUNY Stony Brook School of Medicine, Winthrop is a 591 bed university hospital. Winthrop's Department of Medicine has 11 Divisions with more than 65 full-time faculty, supplemented by a large clinical and basic science research staff. Our faculty includes many with national leadership roles in research, subspecialty professional societies, and medical education. With our high quality Fellowship Programs, the Department provides superior academic, research, and clinical educational opportunities for housestaff. Please see the list of recent publications by our faculty included on the website.

Our faculty sets the highest standards for academic achievement for our housestaff. The faculty is devoted to providing structure and education for our Residency Program while uniformly maintaining cordial and close working relationships with trainees. Selected for their excellence as teachers, researchers, and clinicians, these dedicated faculty serve as role models and mentors, guiding Residents in learning the full spectrum of Internal Medicine with a focus on expert clinical care and academic growth, tailored to the individual needs of the trainee We also offer a Subspecialty Mentoring Program for interested trainees.

Winthrop's clinical affiliation with the New York Presbyterian Health System enhances and enriches the range of the Department's clinical programs, as well as educational and research opportunities for our housestaff. The clinical experiences at Winthrop reflect a broad and diverse group of illnesses in patients from all socioeconomic classes, with clinical material and acuity of illness on a par with major urban centers.

Winthrop's Internal Medicine Training Program has consistently developed superior clinicians and academicians in Internal Medicine and its subspecialties. Our residents are highly productive in their own right in research, publication, and presentation of their work at regional and national meetings. Our graduates pursuing subspecialty training have gone on to top Fellowships throughout the United States. Those opting for academic or private Internal Medicine practice have similarly been highly successful at medical centers throughout the country, particularly in the New York State area.

Message from Program Director

Dr. Michael Ammazzalorso, Senior Associate Program Director, and Dr. Mark Corapi, Program Director in the Health Sciences Library
Choosing the right Residency Program is a key career decision. In my more than 15 years experience as a Residency Program Director, medical students and residents consistently tell me that as a student they want to be sure the training program they select will provide them with excellent clinical teaching, research opportunities, and Fellowship and career support and placement. I encourage you to consider Winthrop's Residency Training Program. Our philosophy is to set the highest academic standards and expectations while providing the opportunity for residents to learn in a nurturing environment that encourages clinical excellence and scholarship.

With a Chairman dedicated to residency education, scholarship and career advancement, experienced Program Directors directly involved on a daily basis with your education, and a dedicated faculty of teachers, mentors, and supervisors, residents truly find our training program "Welcoming and World Class". The daily interactions that take place provide personal attention, prompt responses to clinical questions, and close professional relationships between residents and faculty.

The program, fully approved by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education, is the major teaching affiliate in Nassau County for the State University of New York-Health Science Center at Stony Brook, and the faculty maintains appointments in the Department of Medicine at Stony Brook. Medical students at every level rotate through the department's high quality physical diagnosis courses, advanced interviewing programs, clerkships, subinternships, and elective rotations. Consistently, our faculty have been the recipients of Stony Brook's most prestigious teaching awards.

Interactive, small group learning opportunities
The aim of the program is to provide residents with a rich and rewarding educational experience in general internal medicine and its subspecialties in a supportive learning environment. Winthrop's location, 30 minutes by train from NYC with the LIRR station right at the hospital, provides housestaff with a diverse patient population, with a wide range of clinical conditions. Our case mix and severity of illness are comparable to any seen in the NY metropolitan area with patients from NYC, Queens, Brooklyn, Nassau, and Suffolk. The program emphasizes direct patient care, with residents assuming increasing responsibility for patients as their training progresses. Residents have a leading role in supervising and teaching medical students who are regularly assigned to Winthrop during their clinical years. This experience facilitates the development of leadership and teaching skills. We've always elicited the feedback of our residents in program planning. Residents are directly involved in the ongoing assessment of the program as participants in our Residency Education and Planning Committees. This ensures regular involvement of the residents in shaping their program.

Our program is recognized for having achieved an optimal environment for academic achievement to assure that our residents reach their full potential in clinical medicine, research, teaching, and team leadership. Graduates of our program are well prepared to pursue fellowship training in top programs, an academic career, or proceed into practice.

We look forward to meeting with you at your interview to discuss opportunities at Winthrop.

    Ambulatory Training

Residents interact with faculty and patients in thriving Ambulatory settings.
A particular strength of the ambulatory training program is the close working relationship that develop between the faculty preceptor, the resident, and their teaching practice clinic team in weekly continuity care clinic. For categorical residents, block rotations in ambulatory care provide increased ambulatory training experience in general and subspecialty medicine, as well as hands-on experience. Incorporated into the block rotation are experiences for the internist in ophthalmology, office gynecology, otolaryngology, dermatology, adolescent medicine, orthopaedics and psychiatry.

An advanced interviewing skills course is scheduled into the curricula, and is a popular component of the ambulatory training block. Areas such as practice management, clinical decision-making, continuous quality improvement, patient education, and ethics are equally built into the curricula.

All residents complete an innovative four week structured training program in perioperative medical consultation. During this outstanding rotation, residents work one-on-one under the supervision of a senior faculty preceptor to learn the role of the internist as consultant.

    Research

Winthrop's residents have a long tradition of achievement and accomplishment in research. Residents have presented their work at regional and national meetings such as the American College of Physicians (ACP), the American Thoracic Society (ATS), American College of Chest Physicians (ACCP), Academy of Allergy & Immunology, and the American Society of Hematology.

In addition to clinical and basic research experiences at Winthrop, our residents and subspecialty residents have pursued electives at the National Institute of Health (NIH) and the Cold Spring Harbor Research Laboratory Our clinical affiliation with the New York Presbyterian Health System and our academic affiliation with SUNY at Stony Brook provide additional opportunities for research experiences. Nationally recognized and funded basic science and clinical research programs in all of the divisions of the Department of Medicine are ongoing, and Housestaff are actively involved in this research and publication effort.

All Residents receive a series of workshops in critical appraisal of the literature and a course in the basics of statistics and medical analysis. These skills are then applied to the residents' own research projects as well as a critical appraisal of study design of literature in Journal Club and in the study of evidence based medicine at Morning Report.
