Winthrop University Hospital House Staff Research Day
In Celebration of Scholarship
On May 14th 2008 Winthrop hosted its first annual House Staff Research Day attended by hundreds of clinicians and hospital personnel. It was an exhibit and conference where more than 70 medical research posters were displayed and discussed. This endeavor supports the institution's mission of education and research, distinguishing it as a teaching hospital- the intellectual energy and spirit of inquiry which challenges all of us on a daily basis to strive for clinical excellence. The posters represented the scholarly work of Winthrop's residents and fellows whose graduate medical education includes clinical training and research endeavors, some of which focus on basic science and others on clinical studies having the potential to yield improved patient care practices. A number of these posters were also displayed at national medical meetings.
At Winthrop, residents in training are given the skills to pursue scientific inquiry throughout their professional careers. They are mentored in this process by approximately 170 full time faculty, and a range of other professionals at Winthrop, including, for example, PhD researchers, biostatisticians, and health outcomes researchers.
An interdisciplinary Judging Committee reviewed the posters and discussed the science behind the work with the presenting trainees. Four Posters of Distinction were then selected. The awardees included:
- Dr. Anthony Tramontano, Cardiology Fellow: "Circulating endothelial microparticles are elevated in patients with diabetes mellitus: the role of apoptosis" (Basic Science)
- Dr. Jessica Widmer, Internal Medicine Resident: "Inappropriate proton pump inhibitor (PPI) use in the acute hospital setting can be reduced." (Clinical Research)
- Dr. Veronica Brito, Internal Medicine Research Fellow: "What drives length of stay in pneumonia patients?" (Clinical Research)
- Dr. Praveena Paruchuri, Internal Medicine Resident: "Percutaneous patent foramen ovale closure (PFO) in prolonged post operative hypoxemia." (Case Report)
In addition, before the event, the Judging Committee selected four research projects for oral podium presentation. Those honored by this selection included:

Several hundred people participated in Research Day. It was so well received that, according to John F. Aloia, MD, Chief Academic Officer, "the Second Annual Research Day is already scheduled for April 22, 2009- in twice the space."
