The Winthrop-University Hospital-Nassau University Medical Center integrated Rheumatology fellowship strives to produce exceedingly well-trained consultants in rheumatic and immunological disorders. The wide spectrum of pathology seen at Winthrop and our affiliate serves as a foundation for our clinical educational curriculum. Our didactic basic science and research program enhances the clinical curriculum by emphasizing the pathophysiology and immunology of rheumatic diseases and by encouraging creative approaches to the diagnosis and therapy of rheumatic disorders. |
This is a two-year integrated fellowship, sponsored by Winthrop. Each fellow serves as the primary physician under supervision for inpatients admitted to the Rheumatology Service at Winthrop, and has responsibility for approximately 250 consults over the course of the year. In addition, fellows supervise the management and treatment of inpatients and perform consultations at Nassau University Medical Center. Fellows attend clinics at both Winthrop and Nassau University Medical Center, where it is expected, that under supervision, they will assume responsibility for all aspects of patient care.
Rotations in pediatric rheumatology at Schneider Children's Hospital (Long Island Jewish Medical Center) and in geriatric rheumatology at United Presbyterian Residence round out the spectrum of disorders seen by the fellow. The didactic program includes Grand Rounds lectures, Journal Club, imaging conference, core basic science lectures and rehabilitation conference. Clinical and bench research projects are chosen in consultation with the faculty.
