Program Director's Message
The WUH Allergy and Immunology Training Program (AITP) provides high quality, culturally competent, comprehensive health care services in a teaching and research environment which improves the health and well-being of patients with allergic and immunologic diseases. We offer a full complement of inpatient and outpatient services, with a deep commitment to medical education and research. |
The WUH Allergy & Immunology training program is a 2-year training program designed to qualify subspecialty residents as candidates for the American Board of Allergy and Immunology certification examination, as competent allergists and immunologists and as physician scientists. This fellowship training program is designed to prepare specialists to provide expert medical care for patients with allergic and immunologic disorders. They can serve as consultants, educators and providers of medical care for diseases such as asthma, allergic rhinitis, atopic dermatitis, drug eruption, insect sting sensitivity, anaphylaxis, latex allergy, immunodeficiency, and other immunologic disorders. Fellows attend clinics where they see allergy and immunology, adult and pediatric patients under supervision and assume responsibility for all aspects of patient care.
The fellows will have rotations in the pediatric pulmonary department and the immunology laboratory at Winthrop University Hospital. Elective rotations are available in Adult Pulmonary, Rheumatology, Adult Infectious Disease and Pediatric Infectious Disease.
The didactic program includes Allergy Grand Rounds, Immunology Grand Rounds, Curriculum/ Board Review including core basic science lectures, Journal Club, Research Conference, Pediatric Allergy Case Conference, Adult Allergy Case Conference, and Multi-disciplinary Conference. Clinical and bench research projects are chosen in consultation with the faculty.
First Year
The goal of the first year of fellowship is the development of clinical skills and experience in allergic and immunologic disorders. The first year fellow attends four outpatient clinics per week, under the supervision of an attending physician. Each clinic provides exposure to allergic and immunologic disease processes in both adult and pediatric patients. Through these clinics, each fellow will build their own practice of patients, and will be expected to manage their care under the supervision of an attending. Inpatient experience is provided through the management of a busy and intellectually stimulating inpatient consultation service. Each fellow must maintain a patient log to document clinical care experiences. During the first year, the fellow is expected to develop a major project in either basic science, translational, or clinical research so that it may be expanded and advanced during the second year.
Second Year
The second year of the fellowship allows for continued, though more limited, clinical experience. He or she will continue to develop clinical skills through outpatient clinics and inpatient consults, though less time is spent in these activities in comparison to first year. Emphasis on research, either in basic science or clinical, is stressed during this year. The goal is focused on attaining data for scientific publication and presentation at a national meeting. Fellows will also have the opportunity to rotate through electives in pediatric pulmonary, adult or pediatric infectious disease, and the immunology laboratory.
