The aim of the Winthrop Kidney Health Program is to keep patients with chronic kidney disease in an optimal state of health and well being by providing them with individualized care using the most advanced treatments. This care is delivered with the help of a multidisciplinary team and is aided by a sophisticated informatics support system. This unique program including physicians, nursing and other disciplines is designed to help those patients who are at risk to protect their kidneys and delay and even prevent the development of kidney failure while maintaining an excellent quality of life.

Transplant Program

For those patients who do develop kidney failure the aim of the program is to help them obtain kidney transplants through a transplant program at Winthrop run by the renowned Columbia University Medical Center Transplant Program and help many avoid the need for dialysis. This innovative program allows patients to undergo their transplant evaluation right here on Long Island at the Nephrology practice site at Winthrop. Columbia University is one of the countrys leading transplant programs and this program with Winthrop allows patients to receive the highest quality transplant care.

To schedule an appointment to be evaluated for a kidney transplant by the Columbia Transplant Team at Winthrop, please contact Joan Kelly, RN, BSN, CCTC, at (212)305-6393 and ask to have your appointment scheduled at Winthrop.

Winthrop Dialysis Services

Medical Director: Naveed Masani, M.D.
The Division of Nephrology and Hypertension provides inpatient and outpatient services for patients on hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis, as well as continuous renal replacement therapies for hospitalized patients with various kidney disorders. Inpatient dialysis and continuous renal replacement therapy is provided at Winthrop University Hospital. Outpatient hemodialysis care is provided at the Mineola Dialysis Unit, Bethpage Dialysis Unit and Sun Harbor Dialysis Unit. Dr. Louis Imbriano is Medical Director for the unit at Sun Harbor. We also have a home dialysis program with peritoneal dialysis and home hemodialysis available through our unit at Mineola. As an example of the high quality care provided by the Winthrop dialysis program, data from the main unit in Mineola reveals that the hemodialysis program meets or exceeds the results both locally and nationally in all areas of Best Treatment Practices and has a standardized mortality ratio of 0.64, well below the national average. Another notable feature of the program is the high rate at which our patients get kidney transplants. The transplantation rate for the Mineola unit is 108% above the expected rate. The Winthrop Dialysis Network has also recently been awarded the distinction of 5 Diamond Status by the IPRO End Stage Renal Disease Network of New York focusing on patient safety. Amongst a total of 243 dialysis units in New York State, Winthrop is one of only 18 facilities in New York State to achieve this status. This prestigious award was earned by all 4 of Winthrops outpatient dialysis centers throughout Long Island and reflects on the great commitment and hard work by all levels of staff. This award recognizes Winthrops strong commitment to providing the highest quality care in a safe environment for patients with end stage renal disease.
