Education and Support for Children with Diabetes and their Families

KINDRED SPIRITS:

United Parents of Children with Diabetes

Greetings! We welcome back Eileen Egan, FNP, CDE, nurse facilitator and Ann Sisalli serving as the parent facilitator for Kindred Spirits.

This meeting is for ADULTS ONLY and meets during the school year on Thursday evenings (*) from 7:30 to 9:00 p.m. in the Community Outreach Center 101 Mineola Blvd.

2010-2011 CALENDAR OF EVENTS FOR TODDLER AND PRE-SCHOOL SUPPORT (TAPS)

Toddler and Pre-school Support (TAPS) will meet:
**Thursday Evenings: 6:00p.m to 7:30p.m. AND/OR
**Saturday Mornings: 10:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.
Please note Holiday Party is on a Sunday!


Parents and children (siblings welcome). Children's activities will be provided while parents participate in a discussion/lecture in a separate room. FREE Parking is in the rear of the building. Drive up to 3rd level. There is a breezeway that connects the garage to the building. Take the elevator down to 2nd floor. Enter through doors to the left.

The Toddler and Pre-school Support group is facilitated by Susan Ruggiero, RN, MS, CDE, Diabetes Nurse Specialist. Geri Raab, Vera Miller, Nancy Keith, and Amanda Krakoff provide activities for the children.

TAPS goal is to provide parents with accurate information and emotional support while their children (both the child with diabetes and siblings) enjoy a positive play experience. Be sure to mark your calendars. Reminder e-mails will be sent to you one week before each meeting. RSVP required, either Yes - or - No , so adequate child care can be provided.
October 14 What’s New in Diabetes Care and Research:

Susan Ruggiero, RN, MS, CDE will demonstrate new technologies
November 13 "Fostering Resilience". John Clark, MSW will discuss "encouraging positive coping for all family members in their experience with diabetes while promoting the "normalcy" of living with this condition"

Managing Diabetes in the School Setting
Susan Ruggiero, RN, MS, CDE will discuss how to prepare for a safe and production for 2010-2011 school year.

April 14 Helping your family cope with diabetes:
Child Life Specialist Melanie Bucholtz, MS, CCLS will offer tips or parents to use with their families during diabetes care. Topics will include coping and distraction skills and sibling concerns.
May 12 Caring for a child with diabetes: A review of diabetes basics, strategies for activity, travel, baby-sitter resources and more!

KIDs Program

Kids Interested in Diabetes
Winthrop-University Hospital

The KIDs Program (Kids Interested in Diabetes) is designed to teach children about diabetes through games and activities. It is FREE and open to children ages 6 to 12 years; no siblings unless specified under the agenda. Meetings, facilitated by Melanie Teslik RN, are held at the same time as the Kindred Spirits (parent support group) on Thursday evenings from 7:30 to 9:00 p.m. in the Community Outreach Center, 101 Mineola Blvd.
