Messages from HCM Foundations

National Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy Association (HCMA)

Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) is the most common genetic heart condition and often runs in families. This is an insidious, complex disorder, fully understood only by a small number of specially trained physicians. Over 600,000 people in the USA have HCM with an estimated 15,000 living on Long Island.

The HCMA was founded to shed light on the condition, raise awareness and provide advocacy, education and support, as well as to develop specialty centers that provide patients with comprehensive care by HCM experts. Since the HCMA believes that everyone has a right to a specialist who truly understands the disease, the Association has established HCM programs around the country.

Winthrop-University Hospital’s HCM Center is one of the HCM programs recognized by the HCMA. Here, patients benefit from multidisciplinary clinical expertise and experience. Offering consultations, pinpointing the diagnosis, controlling symptoms, preventing complications, presenting the full range of treatment options and providing education and reassurance, the Center’s specialists are exceptionally skilled in handling the disease’s complexities and subtleties.

This is what every patient deserves, and it’s gratifying to know that Long Island has this premier resource.

Children’s Cardiomyopathy Foundation (CCF)

The Children’s Cardiomyopathy Foundation (CCF) is a national non-profit organization focused on pediatric cardiomyopathy and dedicated to improving diagnosis, treatment and quality of life for children with cardiomyopathy and their families. CCF is pleased to work with Winthrop's Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy (HCM) Treatment Center to serve the varied needs of children and their family members with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy.  Working alongside Winthrop, CCF can provide the support and education needed to cope with a life-long heart condition.

With a variable and chronic heart condition like hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, CCF always advises diagnosed and at-risk families to get evaluated and managed at a specialty center of care. Winthrop’s Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy (HCM) Treatment Center — the first and only HCM center on Long Island — is one of those specialized Centers of Excellence that meet the American Heart Association and American Collage of Cardiology's HCM treatment guidelines. Under the astute leadership of Dr. Naidu, Director of the HCM Center, Winthrop's  HCM Treatment Center understands the complexities of cardiomyopathy and provides patients with the most current diagnostic and therapeutic options. We are happy to recommend Winthrop's HCM Treatment Center to families in the New York Metropolitan area and are confident that they will receive comprehensive and expert care.
