Todd Cohen, MD, Director of Electrophysiology and the Pacemaker/Arrhythmia Center at Winthrop-University Hospital, is nationally known for his expertise in treating the full range of arrhythmias and for his accomplishments as an inventor. He holds over 20 patents and pending patents for inventions, including advanced pacemakers, implantable and transesophageal defibrillators, novel catheters and sheaths, robotic systems to perform cardiac procedures and the Active Compression-Decompression Resuscitator (CardioPump), a device used as an alternative to standard CPR.
At Winthrop since 1996, Dr. Cohen has brought the Hospital to the forefront of arrhythmia management. Prior to that, he was Director of Electrophysiology at North Shore University Hospital. Through his initiative, Winthrop's electrophysiology team performs all types of radiofrequency catheter ablations, including atrial fibrillation ablation; implants all types of cardiac devices, including biventricular pacemakers and defibrillators; and performs pacemaker and defibrillator lead extractions using a state-of-the-art laser system.
Dr. Cohen is a Diplomate of the American Board of Internal Medicine, Subspecialty of Cardiovascular Disease and Clinical Cardiac Electrophysiology.
His postgraduate training included a fellowship in electrophysiology at the University of California, San Francisco; a cardiology fellowship at Stanford University Medical Center; and a residency in internal medicine at Sinai Hospital in Baltimore. He earned his medical degree from The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, where he received the Alan B. Trimakas Award for Excellence in Cardiovascular Research.
Dr. Cohen is an Associate Professor of Medicine at the SUNY Stony Brook School of Medicine.
A Fellow of the American College of Cardiology and invited faculty for the North American Society of Pacing and Electrophysiology, Dr. Cohen is active in applied and clinical cardiovascular research and has received many grants in support of his investigations. He frequently presents papers at professional conferences and has co-authored over 200 scientific publications.
Dr. Cohen is Editor-in-Chief of the EP LAB Digest and Section Editor of the "Electrophysiology Corner" of the Journal of Invasive Cardiology. He is also the author of Practical Electrophysiology, a comprehensive textbook in the field of electrophysiology published by Health Management Publications.
