Dr. Collin EM Brathwaite is Chairman of the Department of Surgery and Chief of the Division of Minimally Invasive Surgery and Bariatric Surgery at Winthrop University Hospital on Long Island New York.  He is a graduate of Howard University College of Medicine where he completed medical school in only three years, with Honors in Surgery.  His Internship and Residency in General Surgery were obtained at St Vincent’s Hospital and Medical Center in New York City, where he finished in 1988. Dr Brathwaite also attended advanced Fellowship training in Trauma and Critical Care at the renowned Shock Trauma Center at the University of Maryland.  Dr. Brathwaite has held leadership roles in several prestigious professional surgical organizations, having served on the Board of Directors or management committees of these.  Dr Brathwaite is an Associate Professor of Clinical Surgery at Stony Brook University and has held faculty appointments at the Robert Wood Johnson Medical School, as well as Allegheny University of the Health Sciences in the past. He has been the recipient of several teaching awards, has authored or co-authored numerous publications on various aspects of surgery, and at present holds two patents. Dr Brathwaite has also been honored as a clinician by being listed as a “Top Doc” by Philadelphia Magazine, as well as citation by Best Doctors in America on several occasions and as one of America’s Top Surgeons by Castle Connolly Medicine Ltd.  He is affiliated with several professional medical societies including the following groups:

  • Society for Surgery of the Alimentary Tract
  • Association for Academic Surgery
  • American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery
  • Surgical Infection Society
  • American College of Surgeons
  • Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Honor Society

 Dr. Brathwaite performs minimally invasive procedures in General Surgery with a major focus on Gastrointestinal Surgery including Foregut Diseases and Bariatric Surgery.  Some of these include:

  • GIST and other Tumors of the Stomach
  • Intestinal resection for cancer
  • Treatment of achalasia
  • Treatment of adhesions
