Post-Surgical Pain
Options available for the management of post-surgical pain include Patient Controlled Analgesia (P.C.A.), continuous epidural analgesia, spinal narcotics and nerve blocks.

P.C.A. As its name implies, P.C.A. allows the patient to administer pain medication using a special pump. Patients on P.C.A. tend to use less medication and have improved post-operative pain control than patients who receive conventional shots a periodic intervals. The key to the success and safety of P.C.A. is that the patient must press the button to administer the medication. This should NOT be done by family or friends.
Spinal/Epidural Narcotics The administration of spinal or epidural narcotics provides excellent post-operative analgesia.

Each method of pain control has its advantages and disadvantages. Not all patients are suitable candidates for each of the above mentioned techniques. We request that you discuss the options that are best suited for you and your particular surgery with a member to the Department of Anesthesiology.
