Chairman's Message

As Chairman of the Department of Medicine at Winthrop University Hospital, I invite you to explore our Internal Medicine Residency Program. Winthrop University Hospital is a special place with a unique clinical and academic environment. Our Internal Medicine Residency Program offers the opportunity to learn the clinical and academic aspects of Internal Medicine and its subspecialties in a friendly learning environment. Winthrop provides outstanding primary and tertiary care clinical services with a full-time faculty dedicated to patient care, research, and medical education. We are actively involved in medical education at all levels, from medical students to practitioner, and participate in research at both the basic science and clinical level. We are a major clinical campus of the Stony Brook University School of Medicine, with 80 students in residence during their clinical years. We have fellowships in all subspecialties of Internal Medicine.

Our faculty sets the highest standards for academic achievement for our housestaff. The faculty is devoted to providing structure and education for our Residency Program while uniformly maintaining cordial and close working relationships with trainees. Selected for their excellence as teachers, researchers, and clinicians, these dedicated faculty serve as role models and mentors, guiding Residents in learning the full spectrum of Internal Medicine with a focus on expert clinical care and academic growth, tailored to the individual needs of the trainee. We also offer a Subspecialty Mentoring Program for interested trainees.

The clinical experiences at Winthrop reflect a broad group of illnesses in patients from diverse backgrounds. Winthrop’s Internal Medicine Training Program has consistently developed superior clinicians and academicians in Internal Medicine and its subspecialties. Our residents are highly productive in their own right in research, publication, and presentation of their work at regional and national meetings. Graduates pursuing subspecialty training have gone on to top Fellowships throughout the United States. Those opting for academic or private Internal Medicine practice have similarly been highly successful at medical centers throughout the country.

I welcome you to further explore Winthrop’s Internal Medicine Program. I am certain you will be favorably impressed and I look forward to meeting many of you.
