Survivorship

Generation of Survivors
Pat Lyons Long Term Follow-Up Program

The only Survivorship Health Program of its type on Long Island

With advances in the treatment of childhood cancer, more than 75 percent of children diagnosed with a malignancy in the United States will survive into adulthood. Today there are more than 220,000 survivors of childhood cancer, nearly one in every 900 young adults. The majority of childhood cancer survivors are living full, healthy lives, but they may be at risk of developing late effects from the life-saving treatments used to cure their cancer. The Generation of Survivors Clinic, sponsored by the Pat Lyons Foundation, is dedicated to helping this growing generation of survivors achieve the healthiest and fullest life possible by providing evaluation, health education and support.

Programs/Services

Survivors of childhood cancer have unique needs best addressed in the specialized setting of a long term follow-up program focusing on survivorship issues. Generation of Survivors is the only survivorship health program on Long Island where comprehensive follow-up care is delivered in a quiet and relaxed atmosphere, with hours that are separate from those of the busy ambulatory treatment center. All the resources of the program are directed toward meeting the special needs of the survivors and their families.

The Center's staff provides comprehensive and compassionate care based upon guidelines and standards established by The Children's Oncology Group (COG) and other recognized authorities. All patients are seen by a board certified Pediatric Hematologist/Oncologist, Certified Pediatric Oncology nurses, and other specialists experienced in working with survivors of childhood cancer.
In recognition of the special needs of the survivors and their families, the Center's team:

  • Offers a complete evaluation of the survivor
  • Identifies and addresses potential late effects from diagnosis or treatment
  • Provides up-to-date information and support for survivors and their families
  • Assists survivors in accessing the many resources available to them, including referrals for assistance with education, employment and other concerns
  • Provides guidance and education for living a healthy lifestyle
  • Serves as consultants to the medical community
  • Participates in childhood cancer research studies

Who is eligible?

  • Survivors of childhood cancer who are five years since diagnosis and two years off treatment
  • Childhood cancer survivors diagnosed between the ages of 0-18 years
