Helping Those in Need

Perhaps one of the most remarkable outcomes of Hurricane Sandy was to see strangers come together to help those impacted by the storm rebuild their lives once again.

Prompted to do some thing good for displaced residents in the Long Beach area, Ryan Michaelman (left) from the storm-affected town of Island Park, and Jon-Erik Borgersen from Lakeview Fire Department (right), set up a donation drop-off site at their place of employment, Synergy Gym, in Garden City Park.

When Cathy Sokol, a devoted member of NYU Winthrop’s Annual Swim-A-Thon Committee, heard about it, she, with the support of Ron Marino, DO, Associate Chairman of Pediatrics at NYU Winthrop, donated 100 NYU Winthrop Swim-A-Thon beach towels for those in need.

“I am thankful that we were able to assist these young men in their relief efforts,” said Ms. Sokol.

Mark your calendar! The next Annual Swim-A-Thon to benefit the Child Life Program at NYU Winthrop is set for April 21, 2013 at Hofstra’s Swim Center. For more information, call 1-866-WINTHROP or visit www.winthrop.org/events.
