John and Janet Kornreich Charitable Foundation Shows Continued Support for NYU Winthrop
Thanks to an unprecedented gift of nearly $700,000 from the John and Janet Kornreich Charitable Foundation, young patients in NYU Winthrop’s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) and Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) will continue to benefit from the highest level of specialized care for which the Hospital is known.
After seeing the need firsthand, Mr. and Mrs. Kornreich made the decision to make a magnanimous gift towards the purchase of 11 state-of-the-art bedside cardiac monitors and a central station monitor for NYU Winthrop’s PICU, as well as 37 cardiac monitors for the NICU. Each of these continuous monitoring devices will serve as a valuable tool to provide additional information to the medical and nursing staff about the physiological condition of a patient.
“Accurate, continuous monitoring and observation of our young patients is crucial,” said Warren Rosenfeld, MD, Chairman of the Department of Pediatrics.
“Bedside cardiac monitors provide ongoing assessments of newborns’ cardiovascular and respiratory systems, measuring heart and breathing rates. Should these rates become too slow or too fast, our specialized team can take emergency action without delay,” added Nazeeh Hanna, MD, Chief of Neonatology at NYU Winthrop.
“We are most appreciative of the Kornreich Foundation’s generosity, which will benefit the lives of countless young patients at NYU Winthrop for years to come,” said Lynn Drucker, NYU Winthrop’s Director of Development.
Giving back to the local community in tangible ways is a cause that is near and dear to the Kornreich family’s heart. In fact, this is not the first time that they have made a major contribution to NYU Winthrop. Last year, the couple provided funding for the purchase of several entertainment systems, equipped with DVD players and software, for patients in NYU Winthrop’s Cancer Center for Kids and The Children’s Medical Center.
“It is very gratifying to know that our contributions to NYU Winthrop are directly improving the lives of infants and young patients,” said Mr. Kornreich.
As a New York State-designated Regional Perinatal Center, NYU Winthrop is able to deliver the highest level of obstetrical and perinatal care because the Hospital is well equipped to handle the most complicated pregnancies and high-risk deliveries. NYU Winthrop’s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit treats high-risk infants born at NYU Winthrop, and cares for scores of seriously ill newborns transported annually from other hospitals to the Hospital for specialized treatment. Collected data clearly shows that NYU Winthrop’s NICU has among the best outcomes in the nation.
