Former Senator's Final "Extend the Holidays" Toy Drive Proves to be the Best One Yet

Former Senator Charles J. Fuschillo (center) joins with John F. Collins, President and CEO of Winthrop (fifth from left), Assemblyman David G. McDonough (District 14), members of Winthrop staff and students at Calhoun High School at the "Extend the Holidays" toy drive.

In what proved to be the most successful toy drive that he organized at Winthrop since starting them in 1998, former Senator Charles J. Fuschillo visited Winthrop on December 30, 2013, delivering more than 2,000 toys collected through his final "Extend the Holidays" toy drive and bringing smiles to pediatric patients in the Hospital.

Representatives from the Nassau County Sheriff Correction Officer's Benevolent Association, Laborers Local 66, and Local 1298, along with members of Calhoun High School's Student Council, all of whom participated in the program, joined with the then-Senator in delivering the toys, which are given out to patients throughout the entire year.

Little Daniela Portanova (center), her mom, Angela (right), and grandma, Michelle Martone, were all smiles thanks to a visit from Former Senator Charles J. Fuschillo, Jr., who came to Winthrop bearing loads of toys during his final "Extend the Holidays" visit.

"It's amazing to see how many toys have been collected this year. This really is the gift that keeps on giving all year long," said Mr. Fuschillo.

"We are thankful for the Senator's generosity and establishing a tradition that has no doubt brought many groups together over the years for the benefit of our patients," said John F. Collins, President and CEO of Winthrop. "This wonderful outpouring of kindness not only brightens the lives of our young patients today, but throughout the entire year, and we thank former Senator Fuschillo for being so instrumental in making this happen."
