NYU Winthrop Celebrates Grand Reopening of the Hempstead High School Health Center

The Hempstead High School Health Center team.

Members of the NYU Winthrop community gathered with the Hempstead School District for a ribbon cutting ceremony at the Hempstead High School Health Center on November 5, 2013, to celebrate the completion of the Center's renovations and grand reopening.

"We are confident this upgraded facility will make a meaningful difference for the healthcare of students, their families and the Hempstead community," said Jane Swedler, MD, Chief of Adolescent Medicine at NYU Winthrop, and Medical and Program Director for the Hempstead High School Health Center.

The renovations were made possible thanks to a $115,000 grant awarded to NYU Winthrop by the United States Department of Health and Human Services in 2011. This funding enabled the Center to institute Electronic Health Records at the school and link them to the Hospital's electronic registry. Additionally, the Center was able to purchase new healthcare equipment as well as refurbish their offices. These improvements enhance the Center's ability to provide effective, efficient and high quality care to all 1,500 students at Hempstead High School.

Present at the ribbon cutting were (l.-r.) Diane Petito, RN, CPNP, On Site Manager of the Hempstead High School Health Center; Edward Chewens, MBA, Vice President, Physician Practices and Ambulatory Networks at NYU Winthrop; Jane Swedler, MD, Chief of Adolescent Medicine at NYU Winthrop, and Medical and Program Director for the Hempstead High School Health Center; Warren Rosenfeld, MD, Chairman of the Department of Pediatrics at NYU Winthrop; Senator Kemp Hannon (R-Nassau); Susan Johnson, Superintendent of the Hempstead School District; Reginald Stroughn, Principal of Hempstead High School; and John F. Collins, President and CEO of NYU Winthrop.

Now in its 16th year, the Hempstead High School Health Center, originally established as a collaborative project between NYU Winthrop, the Hempstead School District and the Nassau County Department of Health, provides primary and urgent health care, counseling and specialty referrals as needed.
