A Cause to Celebrate Raises Nearly $120,000 for NYU Winthrop's Child Life Program

NYU Winthrop's 2015 A Cause to Celebrate honorees, Patricia and Chris Hatzfeld with their son, Sean. Sean was successfully treated at NYU Winthrop for severe sepsis in 2013. (L.-R.) In an outstanding show of support for NYU Winthrop’s Child Life Program, 250 guests gathered at The Garden City Hotel on March 19 to enjoy an evening marked by fine dining and a musical performance by Shadows of the Sixties – A Tribute to the Four Tops, Supremes and Friends at “A Cause to Celebrate.” The event raised nearly $120,000 for the program.

The event honored Sean Hatzfeld, a young patient who benefited tremendously from the Child Life Program, and his family. The Rockville Centre resident was admitted to NYU Winthrop in 2013, when he was eight-years-old. The Hospital’s multi- disciplinary pediatric team determined he was suffering from severe sepsis and was able to treat Sean’s potentially life-threat- ening infection quickly and effectively, saving his life. During his 14-day stay at NYU Winthrop, the Child Life Program provided much needed respite for young Sean with games, movies and other forms of play, education and relaxation techniques.

“Being honored at the event is a humbling experience, given the extraordinary work that happens on a daily basis at the Hospital,” said Patricia Hatzfeld, Sean’s mother. “We were so grateful for the amount of dedication and expertise that we experienced during Sean’s time at NYU Winthrop, and this gives us an opportunity to give back to the Child Life Program that helped Sean so much while he was in the Hospital.

The theme of the evening was “A Night of Motown,” and guests enjoyed a lovely cocktail hour followed by a sit-down dinner in the main ballroom. Shadows of the Sixties brought the crowd to its feet during their exciting performance. Attendees also had an opportunity to participate in a raffle and silent auction, featuring items donated by local vendors.

A Cause to Celebrate is a pivotal annual event that garners the community’s support for NYU Winthrop’s Child Life Program. Since its inception in 1998, A Cause to Celebrate has raised more than $1 million for the program.
