Yuletide Ball Raises Over $160,000 for Child Life Program

Jane Smith and her son, Grant Smith, at NYU Winthrop's 2013 Yuletide Ball.

In the true spirit of the holiday season, friends and supporters of NYU Winthrop Hospital recently gathered for the annual Yuletide Ball, an elegant evening that featured a traditional Holiday sit-down dinner and dancing to benefit the Hospital's Child Life Program. The 2013 Yuletide Ball, graciously hosted by Ali and Rich Volpe in their beautiful home on December 7, 2013, was a remarkable success, raising over $160,000.

"We are grateful for the opportunity to host this year's event to help raise funds for such a fundamental program at NYU Winthrop," said Mrs. Volpe, who, along with her husband Rich, also served as Co-Chairs of the 2013 Yuletide Ball Committee. "It was a wonderful evening that garnered great support from the Garden City community, for which we are very thankful."

Over the years, NYU Winthrop's Yuletide Ball has raised more than two million dollars in support of the Hospital's Child Life Program, which is dedicated to helping children understand and cope with the hospital experience.

Among the special guests in attendance of this year's Yuletide Ball was Garden City resident Jane Smith, who recently celebrated a most momentous milestone – her 100th birthday. On December 27, 1913, Mrs. Smith was born at NYU Winthrop (then known as Nassau Hospital) and over the years, has been a recipient of the Hospital's world-class care, for which she is most appreciative.

"Long Island has changed a great deal in my lifetime but it is always nice to know there is a good reliable Hospital to go to like NYU Winthrop," said Mrs. Smith, who is a patient of NYU Winthrop cardiologist Mark Goodman, MD.

"I have always had great experiences and felt very safe there." And while remarkable care from NYU Winthrop and its dedicated clinical team have certainly helped Mrs. Smith along her journey to 100, she also knows full well the keys to staying young.

"Eat well and laugh a lot if you want to live to be 100!" she said.

We gratefully acknowledge the generosity of our 2013 sponsors
