Inspired by his passions for swimming and helping children, Ron Mario, DO, Associate Chairman of Pediatrics at NYU Winthrop, wanted to come up with a way to connect these passions to an activity that would enhance the growth of NYU Winthrop’s Department of Pediatrics, raise funds, and get children involved in service to their community. With these goals in mind, Dr. Marino conceptualized an event where swimmers of all ages and skill levels could come together on a Sunday morning each spring to enjoy swimming laps while raising funds for a worthy cause. Now, more than a decade later, with the support of various Hospital Departments and the community, this highly anticipated annual event has garnered a total of nearly $210,000 to benefit the Child Life Program at NYU Winthrop.
“I love the idea that children are able to participate in a healthy activity while raising funds for a worthy cause,” said Dr. Marino.
Each year, the Swim-a-thon, which takes places at Hofstra University’s Swim Center, is enhanced by an outpouring of support from the community – from local vendors and bands who provide face painting, arts and crafts, and entertainment, to massage therapists, swim coaches, and yoga instructors who donate their time and services to this terrific familycentered event.
Instrumental to the success of this year’s event, which raised close to $40,000, was support from various sponsors including Saf-T-Swim Inc., who were active partners with Dr. Marino, promoting the event in their facilities and encouraging members of the community to register and donate.
“We are deeply appreciative of the community’s ongoing support which has benefitted countless pediatric patients at NYU Winthrop,” said Dr. Marino.
