- Winthrop Names Joseph Mattana, MD, Chief of the Division of Nephrology and Hypertension - Archived

Winthrop-University Hospital is pleased to announce that Joseph Mattana, MD, has been appointed Chief of the Hospital’s Division of Nephrology and Hypertension.
Dr. Mattana joins Winthrop from the North Shore-Long Island Jewish Health System, where he most recently served as Chief of the Division of Kidney Diseases and Hypertension at both campuses, Professor of Medicine at the Hofstra North Shore-LIJ School of Medicine, Adjunct Professor of Clinical Medicine at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine and Associate Investigator at the Feinstein Institute for Medical Research.
Dr. Mattana graduated cum laude with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Chemistry from New York University and earned his Doctor of Medicine at SUNY Downstate Medical Center. He completed his residency in internal medicine at Long Island Jewish Medical Center and his clinical and research fellowships in Nephrology.
Dr. Mattana was awarded a National Kidney Foundation Research Fellowship and trained in the NIH-funded laboratory of Dr. Pravin Singhal. The recipient of the Trainee Investigator Award from the American Federation for Medical Research, Dr. Mattana then joined the faculty at Long Island Jewish, where he was recognized with the Young Investigator Award from the National Kidney Foundation and Grant-in-Aid from the American Heart Association to support his research.
As reflected in his many publications, Dr. Mattana’s research has covered a broad span of topics, including laboratory research, focusing especially on how protein oxidation modifies cell-matrix interactions; clinical research, including the study of oxidative modification of protein in patients with kidney disease; and education research focusing on novel educational approaches in resident and fellow education. He has mentored many students, residents, fellows and junior faculty in laboratory, clinical and education research.
In addition to serving as Chief of Nephrology at North Shore-LIJ, Dr. Mattana held several other important roles there over the years, including serving as Program Director of the Internal Medicine Residency Program at LIJ and Associate Chair for Education. Dr. Mattana has also played a significant role in medical student education and was elected to membership in the Leo M. Davidoff Society of the Albert Einstein College of Medicine for Excellence in Medical Student Education. He is a former Council Member-at-Large for the American College of Physicians Downstate II Region. Dr. Mattana resides in Syosset, NY.
