Members of the Edward Smith Mineola Lions Club recently gathered in support of the Diabetes Education Center at Winthrop-University Hospital to present two charitable donations totaling $12,000. A final pledge payment for $10,000 was directed to Winthrop’s Pre-Diabetes Intervention Program – a unique program designed to promote lifestyle changes among those with pre-diabetes and stem the rise in type 2 diabetes. With this donation, the Mineola Lions Club fulfills its $100,000 pledge made in 2007, which funded the creation of the Pre-Diabetes Program at Winthrop.
In addition, a separate $2,000 donation will support the Center’s Kids Interested in Diabetes (KIDS) Program – an interactive educational program designed to teach children ages seven to 12 about diabetes through games and activities.
The Edward Smith Mineola Lions Club is an ardent supporter of Winthrop’s efforts to prevent and treat diabetes and the devastating side effects such as blindness. Over the years, the Mineola Lions Club has been committed in its support of the Diabetes Education Center through numerous donations.
“We are deeply appreciative of the Mineola Lions support of Winthrop’s comprehensive diabetes prevention and support programs,” said Virginia Peragallo-Dittko, RN, BC-ADM, CDE, FAADE, Executive Director of Winthrop’s Diabetes and Obesity Institute. “The Lions Club’s commitment to combating diabetes and its effects has been instrumental in our success offer diabetes prevention services to the community.”
Currently celebrating its 34th year of service to the community, the Diabetes Education Center recently received its eighth consecutive reaccreditation from the American Diabetes Association (ADA). The Diabetes Education Center was the first nationally accredited outpatient education program in New York State and it continues to provide superior educational and community outreach programs to adults and children living with and managing diabetes.
