Mineola, NY – Spreading hope and raising awareness about the importance of early screening for colon cancer is something that is near and dear to the family of Debra Ann Franceschini. In keeping with their decade-long tradition of giving to benefit both inpatient and outpatient cancer programs at Winthrop-University Hospital, the Franceschini family of Piccolo’s Restaurant in Mineola recently presented a check in the amount of $33,005 to the Hospital.
“We are most grateful for the continuous support of the Franceschini Family, which has touched so many patients over the years,” said Lynn Drucker, Assistant Vice President, Development at Winthrop.
After Robert Franceschini of Albertson lost his wife of 26 years to colon cancer in April 2006, he felt the best way to honor her memory was to raise money to help fight the disease that took her from him and their two sons.
“Colon cancer is treatable if caught early,” he said, “and I want to encourage individuals to get screened at a younger age.”
A decade ago, the Franceschini family began hosting an annual golf outing to raise funds in Debra Ann’s honor. Since that time, the family, who established the Inpatient Intervention Colorectal Cancer Screening Research Fund at Winthrop, has raised nearly $375,000 to-date to benefit patients at Winthrop.
“I can’t stop,” said Mr. Franceschini when reflecting on his dedication to giving. “It’d be like giving up on her.”
The 11th Annual Debra Ann Franceschini Golf Outing is set for Monday, August 22, 2016 at the Brookville Country Club in Old Brookville. Registration begins at 11 AM; the Shot Gun is at 1 PM. A cocktail reception and awards ceremony featuring an array of raffle prizes begins at 5:30 PM. Golf sponsorship packages as well as single golfer and dinner options are still available. For more information or to register, call (516) 248-8110.
The Franceschini family owns and operates Piccolo’s Restaurant on Jericho Turnpike in Mineola, where son Robert manages the dining room and son James is a chef. Robert is also an artist, and his beautiful and soulful paintings are on display throughout the restaurant.
