Most Wired Hospitals Use Technology to Enhance the Patient Experience

Hospitals and Health Networks "Most Wired Hospitals"Mineola, NY – Winthrop-University Hospital has been named one of the nation’s “Most Wired” Hospitals, according to a recent survey by Hospitals & Health Networks (H&HN). The annual Most Wired® survey measures the level of IT adoption in U.S. hospitals and health systems to enhance the patient experience. This is the fifth consecutive year that Winthrop has been recognized with this prestigious designation.

“Winthrop is a pioneer in the use of technology to enhance patient care and safety, and it’s no surprise that we continue to lead the way for health information technology on Long Island and beyond,” said John F. Collins, Winthrop’s President and CEO.

Most Wired hospitals excel in four key areas including infrastructure and security; business and administrative management; clinical quality and safety; and clinical integration.

Winthrop recently undertook several major network enhancement initiatives that not only provided improvements to the network resiliency and response time within the inpatient clinical settings, but also provided additional features and functions to Winthrop’s Research & Academic Center and its growing number of physician practices and remote sites. Expanded communication and collaboration tools now enable Winthrop patients, physicians and staff to seamlessly connect to key information resources anytime, anywhere, from any device.

“We continue to be innovative and work closely with our IT partners to optimize the technology we adopt,” said Maureen Gaffney, MHS, RPAC, RN, Senior Vice President, Clinical Operations, Chief Medical Information Officer at Winthrop. “Winthrop understands the value of responsible use of technology in order to bring safe electronically enhanced practice to our patients. This Most Wired recognition validates our long-term commitment to building an integrated environment where our clinicians can leverage electronic tools to provide efficient, quality care.”

“Winthrop is proud to once again be recognized as one of the nation’s Most Wired Hospitals and Health Systems by H&HN’s Most Wired Survey. Our mission statement – “Your Health Means Everything” – is at the core of everything we do and provides the focus to keep the organization moving forward in the right direction. Receiving this prestigious award reinforces our commitment to and focus on our patients and the community,” said Chris Iorio, Assistant Vice President and Chief Information Officer at Winthrop.

According to the results of the latest survey, technology is improving the efficiency of care delivery and creating a new dynamic in patient interactions.

“Hospitals are breaking out of their traditional four walls and providing care where and when patients need it,” said Rick Pollack, president and CEO of the American Hospital Association (AHA). “Most Wired hospitals exemplify this transformation by harnessing technology, engaging patients and offering services remotely.”

HealthCare’s Most Wired® survey, conducted between January 15 and March 15, 2016, is published annually by Health & Hospitals Networks (H&HN). The 2016 Most Wired® survey and benchmarking study is a leading industry barometer measuring information technology (IT) use and adoption among hospitals nationwide. The survey of 680 participants, representing an estimated 2,146 hospitals—more than 34 percent of all hospitals in the U.S.—examines how organizations are leveraging IT to improve performance for value-based healthcare in the areas of infrastructure, business and administrative management; quality and safety; and clinical integration.

Detailed results of the survey and study can be found in the July issue of H&HN. For a full list of winners, visit the H&HN website.
