Mineola, NY – The Children’s Medical Center at Winthrop-University Hospital is pleased to announce the 19th Annual “A Cause to Celebrate,” benefitting the Child Life Program. Honoring Babylon resident Ronald V. Marino, DO, MPH, Associate Chairman of Pediatrics at Winthrop, the highly anticipated annual event will take place on Thursday, March 31, 2016 at The Garden City Hotel.
A seasoned expert and highly esteemed member of the Winthrop medical staff, Dr. Marino has long been an advocate for the Hospital’s Child Life Program. An avid swimmer, Dr. Marino had a vision for a fundraiser that would connect a healthy activity with giving back to the Hospital and young patients he adores. In 2002, Dr. Marino conceptualized the Swimathon, an annual event that brings swimmers of all ages and skill levels together at Hofstra University’s Swim Center to raise funds for the Child Life Program. Thanks to Dr. Marino’s passion to help, and the ongoing support of community members, local businesses and staff, the event has raised more than $350,000 for the Child Life Program at Winthrop.
“This night of music and camaraderie has been a pleasure to attend since it started 18 years ago,” said Dr. Marino. “I have had the privilege of seeing our community come together to raise funds for the Child Life Program. The services of this program bring light and joy to our pediatric patients and their families during a time of need. I am honored to be a part of the Winthrop pediatric family and share in this important event.”
The evening will feature musical entertainment by The Mahoney Brothers, performing “Long Live the Beatles.” The funds raised by “A Cause to Celebrate” support Winthrop’s extraordinary Child Life Program, through which certified Child Life Specialists utilize play and education to improve the understanding of medical procedures, teach relaxation techniques to help the patients cope with illness or surgery and provide emotional support for the entire family.
“It is only fitting that this year, we honor a man who has contributed so much to the Child Life Program,” said Nicole Almeida, MS, CCLS, Director of Winthrop’s Child Life Program. “We are also deeply appreciative of all those who have supported this event over the years to ensure the Child Life team can continue to meet the unique psychosocial needs of our pediatric patients and their families.”
