- Winthrop-University Hospital’s Sports Medicine Program Awards College Scholarships to High School Athletes
- July 7, 2015
For the past three years, Winthrop-University Hospital’s Sports Medicine Program has provided athletic trainers for local high school sport teams. Winthrop has partnered with seven high schools including Garden City, Plainview, South Side in Rockville Centre, East Meadow, Clarke in East Meadow, MacArthur and Division Avenue in Levittown.
“Throughout the partnership, we have met many of the hard working, dedicated athletes and wanted to honor their achievements with a scholarship opportunity,” said Stephen Wirth, PT, Administrative Director of Sports Medicine at Winthrop.
Senior students from the partnering high schools who were applying to a college program in healthcare or a related field and had a GPA of 3.0 or higher were eligible. As part of the application process, students were asked to submit an essay supporting why they should be selected and explaining how athletics has been a part of their goals for future contributions in healthcare. All applications were reviewed by the Winthrop Sports Medicine Committee. One student from each of the partnering high schools was then selected to receive a $500 scholarship.
The winners are as follows: Binita Shah, a Tennis, Bowling and Badminton athlete from WT Clarke High School who will be attending Barnard College this fall majoring in Oncology; Paul Chavez, a Football, Track and Field, and Wrestling athlete from East Meadow High School who plans to major in Physical Therapy; Bridget Bingham, a Field Hockey and Lacrosse athlete from Garden City High School who plans to attend Georgetown University this fall majoring in Biology; Jacquelyn McCreory, a Soccer and Lacrosse athlete from Division Avenue High School in Levittown who will be attending Adelphi University majoring in Nursing; Greg Baumstein, a Soccer and Basketball athlete from MacArthur High School in Levittown attending the University of Rhode Island this fall majoring in Physical Therapy; Madalyn Fernbach, a Soccer athlete from Plainview-Old Bethpage John F. Kennedy High School attending Stonehill College this fall majoring in Neuroscience and Biology Pre-Med; and Sarah Buckley, a Softball athlete from South Side High School in Rockville Centre attending Simmons College this fall majoring in Physical Therapy.
“We congratulate all the scholarship recipients and are looking forward to next year’s applications,” said Mr. Wirth.
