- Passing of Winthrop's Chief Medical Officer, Michael Ammazzalorso, MD

Dr. Michael Ammazzalorso, who had served as Vice President of Medical Staff and Chief Medical Officer at Winthrop-University Hospital in Mineola, died on Monday after a long battle with pancreatic cancer. He was 54. Dr. Ammazzalorso is survived by his wife Angela and their children, Alyssa and Andrew.
“Dr. Ammazzalorso’s deep commitment to medicine coupled with his gentle spirit and utmost compassion for the well being of his patients was a guiding light for his students and colleagues alike,” said John F. Collins, President and Chief Executive Officer of Winthrop-University Hospital. “Michael touched so many lives with his decency, kindness and integrity, and he will be sorely missed by all those who had the distinct privilege of knowing and working beside him.”
Dr. Ammazzalorso began his service to Winthrop in 1995. He was recognized for his outstanding commitment and service to both patients and medical students. He was a Master of the American College of Physicians, an honor granted to only a handful of physicians by the nation’s largest medical specialty society.
Dr. Ammazzalorso received his Doctor of Medicine from SUNY Health Science Center at Brooklyn, College of Medicine, and completed his residency in Internal Medicine at Staten Island University Hospital.
