A Cause to Celebrate Raises Nearly $120,000 for Winthrop’s Child Life Program

In an outstanding show of support for Winthrop-University Hospital’s Child Life Program, 250 guests gathered at The Garden City Hotel on March 19, 2015 to enjoy an evening marked by fine dining and a musical performance by Shadows of the Sixties – A Tribute to the Four Tops, Supremes and Friends at “A Cause to Celebrate.” The event raised nearly $120,000 for the program.

The event honored Sean Hatzfeld, a young patient who benefited tremendously from the Child Life Program, and his family. The Rockville Centre resident was admitted to Winthrop in 2013, when he was eight-years-old. The Hospital’s multidisciplinary pediatric team determined he was suffering from severe sepsis – a blood infection that can cause fever, low blood pressure (shock) and serious respiratory distress – and was on the brink of multi-organ failure. Winthrop is a leader in pediatric sepsis care, and the pediatric team was able to treat Sean’s potentially life-threatening infection quickly and effectively, saving his life. During his 14-day stay at Winthrop, the Child Life Program provided much needed respite for young Sean with games, movies and other forms of play, education and relaxation techniques.

“Being honored at the event is a humbling experience, given the extraordinary work that happens on a daily basis at the Hospital,” said Patricia Hatzfeld, Sean’s mother. “We were so grateful for the amount of dedication and expertise that we experienced during Sean’s time at Winthrop, and this gives us an opportunity to give back to the Child Life Program that helped Sean so much while he was in the Hospital.”

The theme of the evening was “A Night of Motown,” and guests enjoyed a lovely cocktail hour followed by a sit-down dinner in the main ballroom. Shadows of the Sixties brought the crowd to its feet during their exciting performance. Attendees also had an opportunity to participate in a raffle and silent auction, featuring items donated by local vendors.

A Cause to Celebrate is a pivotal annual event that garners the community’s support for Winthrop’s Child Life Program, through which specially trained Child Life Specialists help children and their families understand and cope with hospitalization. Since its inception in 1998, A Cause to Celebrate has raised more than $1 million for the program. A vital program across the full spectrum of inpatient, outpatient and emergency services at Winthrop, Child Life is supported in its entirety by philanthropic contributions.
