In the latest step in his illustrious career at Winthrop-University Hospital, Michael Ammazzalorso, MD, has been named Chief Medical Officer.
In this expanded role, Dr. Ammazzalorso will be the primary liaison between Winthrop practitioners and the Administration and Board of Directors. He will serve in this capacity concurrent with his role as President of the Executive Committee of the Medical Staff and the Associate Chairman for Academic and Clinical Affairs in Winthrop’s Department of Medicine.
Dr. Ammazzalorso, who has been a member of the Winthrop Team since 1995, also serves as Senior Associate Program Director for the Internal Medicine Residency Training Program and is an active practitioner in Winthrop Internal Medicine Associates.
A graduate of SUNY Downstate College of Medicine, Dr. Ammazzalorso completed an internship and residency in Internal Medicine at Staten Island University Hospital, where he also served as Chief Resident, Internal Medicine from 1990-1991. Dr. Ammazzalorso is a Master of the American College of Physicians – the nation’s largest medical specialty society – and is a fellow of the Nassau Academy of Medicine.
Throughout his career, Dr. Ammazzalorso has been consistently recognized for his outstanding commitment and service to both patients and medical students. He was named the Department of Medicine’s Attending of the Year in 1996 and 1990, and has been the recipient of several Excellence in Teaching Awards and the Aesculapius Award in Recognition of Outstanding Teaching from SUNY Stony Brook College of Medicine.
An exceptional physician who is dedicated to the health and well-being of his patients, Dr. Ammazzalorso has also been named to Castle Connolly’s Top Doctor’s list on several occasions.
