In recognition of World Diabetes Day, administration and staff from Winthrop-University Hospital gathered with representatives from the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation and Nassau County Executive Edward P. Mangano at a special “Bring Diabetes to Light” event, held at the Nassau County Theodore Roosevelt Executive and Legislative Building on November 14, 2011. Among the keynote speakers for the evening were Virginia Peragallo-Dittko, RN, BC-ADM, CDE, Executive Director of the Winthrop Diabetes & Obesity Institute, and Alan Jacobson, MD, Chief Research Officer at Winthrop, who spoke about Winthrop’s ongoing commitment to diabetes research and education and the importance of its adult and pediatric diabetes programs.

“We are proud to join together in observance of World Diabetes Day, to bring awareness to a disease which affects 246 million people worldwide. We stand with our 15,000 Nassau County neighbors, family and friends who live with diabetes every day, and will work together for continued research and support,” said Mr. Mangano.

Mr. Mangano commended Winthrop and the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation for their ongoing research and educational efforts and presented proclamations to the evening’s keynote speakers. The evening concluded with the illumination of the dome of the Legislative Building – bathed in blue light to commemorate diabetes awareness – and candle lighting ceremony on the front steps of the Nassau County Theodore Roosevelt Executive and Legislative Building.
