On December 20, 2011, the Shag boutique in Roslyn held a trunk show featuring the jewelry of Simone Smith, wife of well-known rap musician LL Cool J (James Todd Smith). Attendees of the trunk show at the boutique were encouraged to donate gift cards to be presented later to patients and families being treated at Winthrop’s Cancer Center for Kids (CCFK). The event garnered a tremendous outpouring of support for the CCFK, and as a result, LL Cool J, along with his family and Randi Butwin, co-owner of Shag, decided to spread even more holiday cheer by paying a visit to the Center and hand-delivering the gifts.

The visit elicited smiles of surprise and delight from patients, parents and the CCFK staff. The family not only gave the gift of their time, they left books, selected by their children, under the playroom holiday tree and distributed the gift cards to the Center’s patients.

While LL Cool J chatted with patients and their families, Ms. Smith talked to the CCFK staff about the jewelry she designs and produces, with sales benefiting cancer treatment and research.

“We are so grateful to Shag and LL Cool J and his family for their generous donations and for taking the time to visit with our patients. Their compassion was truly heartwarming,” said Linda Sweeney, Pediatric Development Manager for Pediatric Hematology/Oncology and The Cancer Center for Kids (CCFK) at Winthrop.
