Winthrop-University Hospital is pleased to announce the expansion of its Department of Orthopaedic Surgery to include two new board certified physicians – Jan A. Koenig, MD, Chief of Joint Replacement Surgery and Director of Computer Assisted and Robotic Orthopedic Surgery, and board certified orthopaedic surgeon, P. Leo Varriale, MD, a leading specialist in arthroscopic surgery.

“On behalf of the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at Winthrop, I am pleased to welcome Dr. Koenig and Dr. Varriale to our world-class team,” said James D. Capozzi, MD, Chairman of the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at Winthrop-University Hospital. “These two expert physicians share Winthrop’s dedication to providing state-of-the-art quality care and further strengthen our commitment as the leading center of orthopaedic excellence on Long Island.”

Jan Koenig, MD, is an internationally recognized expert in the field of joint replacement. He specializes in robotically assisted total knee replacement – a highly accurate approach to knee replacement surgery. In fact, Dr. Koenig pioneered this procedure in New York State having performed over 1,500 robotically assisted cases and recently performed the Hospital’s first computer-assisted total knee replacement utilizing a state-of-the-art robotic cutting guide. This advanced system works by accurately replicating a patient’s damaged knee joint, helping the surgeon to identify the proper size, position, alignment and orientation of the implant before any bone cuts are made. The technology enables the surgeon to perform safer, more precise and less invasive procedures, leading to faster recovery times and improved function for patients. Dr. Koenig is also a leading specialist in performing minimally-invasive, bone-sparing, and tissue-conserving total hip replacements and has recently introduced the ARC total hip replacement system in New York at Winthrop-University Hospital.

Dr. Koenig joins Winthrop from Mercy Medical Center, where he most recently served as the Director of Orthopaedic Surgery and Chief of Arthritis and Joint Replacement Surgery over the last 17 years. He also founded the Joint Endeavor Program for a Rapid Recovery – a multidisciplinary holistic team approach to the total care of the joint replacement patient that features education, exercise, lifestyle evaluation and rehabilitation in addition to the surgery itself.

Dr. Koenig earned his Medical Degree from State University of New York at Buffalo with honors in Surgery and completed a residency in Orthopedic Surgery at Long Island Jewish Hospital. He also completed a fellowship in Advanced Joint Reconstructive Surgery of the Hip and Knee with Dr. Thomas H. Mallory at Joint Implant Surgeons, Inc. in Columbus, Ohio. Dr. Koenig was named “Master Computer-Assisted Surgeon and Educator” by The Plus Institute in San Diego, California in 2005.

Dr. Koenig is a member of many national and local medical and orthopaedic societies including the American Board of Orthopedic Surgeons, American College of Surgeons, American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons, and the New York State Society of Orthopedic Surgeons, among others. Dr. Koenig has preformed extensive research in the fields of medicine and orthopaedics and has shared his expertise through various presentations and lectures and by performing and teaching joint replacement surgery around the world.

P. Leo Varriale, MD, has been providing the Long Island community with premier orthopaedic care since 1984. Dr. Varriale specializes in arthroscopic surgery of the knees, shoulders, rotator cuffs, torn ligaments and other repairs. In addition, he frequently treats a range of hip, leg and wrist fractures.

Dr. Varriale is actively involved in providing orthopaedic care to local high school, college and professional athletes. He served as the Team Physician for the 1996 USA Olympic Baseball team and the World Baseball Classic. Locally, he has served as the Team Physician for SUNY Old Westbury College, where he was recognized with the Outstanding Service Award for Athletic Care. Dr. Varriale is also an active member of the Nassau County Sports Commission – an organization that is dedicated
to creating a healthy sports environment in Nassau County.

Dr. Varriale is an honors graduate of Hofstra University. He received his Medical Degree from the State University of New York, Health Science Center at Downstate. After performing an internship in general surgery at Nassau County Medical Center, Dr. Varriale went on to complete a residency in orthopaedic surgery at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine and the Montefiore Medical Center, where he received the award for Outstanding Resident Research.

Dr. Varriale is a Diplomat of the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgeons and a Fellow of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgery. He has held clinical appointments at Mercy Medical Center, including serving as the Chief of Sports Medicine and Director of Orthopaedic Surgery.

Dr. Koenig and Dr. Varriale are the founding members of Orthopaedic Excellence of Long Island (OELI) – a Garden City and Rockville Centre, NY-based multispecialty musculoskeletal group that is committed to providing excellence in care with compassion for all utilizing their proven OELI TEAM approach.

Dr. Koenig resides in Dix Hills, NY; Dr. Varriale is a resident of Old Brookville, NY.
